Dr. Charles will be at once remembered as the editor of the recent commentary, in two quarto volumes, on The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, as the editor and commentator of numerous Jewish pseudepigraphic works, and as the author of the important Eschatology-Hebrew, Jewish, and Christian. He is the world's best authority on the literature of what used to be called "four centuries of silence between the Old Testament and the New." These four centuries have been revealed by modern scholarship as filled by a vigorous literary activity, the products of which are important beyond estimation in the development of religious thought from Old Testament ideas to those of the New Testament. The theological, religious, and literary evolution of that period is here set forth in topical form and in popular phraseology, encompassed in a volume that slips easily into the pocket. Praise of Dr. Charles' work is superfluous. Only one criticism is suggested-were the last two chapters made the first two a considerable gainwould result for those who approach this subject for the first time.
