Barbara Mertz has a really honest approach to her subject- if she doesn't know she says so! How refreshing is that! Whats more, she is honest enough to say that no-one will ever know an awful lot, so much of what is written can be classified as conjecture. What's more she wears her history lightly, not boring the reader, and sometimes making them laugh out loud. I've read most of the Amelia Peabody, novels- I have come to her works of history late- thank goodness I came to them at all.
