Seller's Description:
Good. 384 pages. Illustrations. Index. This includes a new chapter written especially for this edition. Cover has some wear and soiling. This is an eyewitness report from behind the Bamboo Curtain. Hugo Portisch (born February 19, 1927 in Bratislava, Slovakia, then Czechoslovakia) is an Austrian journalist. He became one of the most important journalists in Austria after the Second World War because of his way of explaining complicated political and economic contexts, even for the layman. He wrote books about his worldwide travels such as So I saw China, So I saw Siberia and others. Derived from a Kirkus review: Red China Today is based on a visit to China. Huge Portisch went armed with all the right and telling questions. Does China with its 700 million people and great unused spaces need Lebensraum? Do the people accept the regime or is there unrest? How is the government managing the food problem? What is the state of industry? etc., etc. Mr. Portisch found the Chinese intent upon functioning "out of our own strength, " the phrase on all lips since the Sino-Soviet disaffection, found a people who while living with one of the lowest standards in the world could say "Today our life is assured." He found the regime structuring leisure and washing brains. He estimated that five to fix hundred million of the population are involved in agriculture. Mr. Portisch assesses the ways and means of the regime in maintaining power and molding the people and weighs China's relationships with the West, For its combination of reach and readability, this is the best choice.
