A Last Visit
This little book is really an extended essay about the essential importance of reading. It is of inestimable value, though, to any J.D. MacDonald fan, especially those Travis McGee devotees who have been in mourning since MacDonald died. MacDonald wrote this booklet only a few months before his death, and wrote it in the form an extended conversation between McGee and Meyer. The opening paragraphs are so evocative of the very best McGee/MacDonald descriptions of Florida they moved me to tears. For those who have keenly felt the absence of Mcgee and Meyer in their lives for the past 20+ years, here is a snippet, unexpectedly good, painfully brief, to remind us of the magnitude of the loss. It's a beautiful thing, a ghost from a vanished past, as good as it gets. The reading message is irrelevant preaching to the converted for any McGee addict, but the unexpected reappearance of Mcgee and Meyer was for me a gift beyond compare, however poignant this one final visit may have been.
