The Four Seasons did manage to hold their own for a while during the initial onslaught of the British Invasion, but it would be foolish to pretend that their albums and B-sides were as strong as those by the best British Invasion groups. The Four Seasons did manage to hold their own for a while during the initial onslaught of the British Invasion, but it would be foolish to pretend that their albums and B-sides were as strong as those by the best British Invasion groups. Nevertheless, they did manage to issue some decent tracks aside from their hits during their prime that have been overlooked by all but die-hard fans. Rarities, Vol. 1 collects 20 songs from the group's 1964-66 heyday, drawing heavily from their 1964 albums Rag Doll and Dawn. Several of the tunes were composed by the team of Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe that wrote most of their biggest hits. They are indeed respectable, but simply not as memorable as their million-sellers, sometimes sounding like competent but lesser versions of smashes like "Dawn" and "Ronnie." One highlight is the odd death-on-the-surf ballad "No Surfin' Today," which shows a pronounced Southern Californian influence. As for rarities, you get a 1963 bowling commercial and a 1965 radio promo, and the second single by the notorious Wonder Who? This group, a thinly veiled pseudonym for The Seasons, scored the most unlikely Top 20 cover of a Dylan song ever with their castrato version of "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." For their follow-up, the "group" tackled Shirley Temple's "On the Good Ship Lollipop"; both it and the flipside are included here, though they are less overlooked gems than historical novelties. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
