It's been quite a while since I've read another book quite as fast as I read this one! In Ellis Peters, I've found yet another author whose mysteries are not going to bore me to death with their simplicity and formulaic quality. The book showcases her talent for creating multi-dimensional characters who find themselves in highly interesting situations that, though requiring some suspension of belief, capture the reader's attention and hold it well throughout the entire book. In Rainbow's End, a very likable, precocious young boy sets off a string of unhappy events when he convinces his friends that it is their job to rid the town of a very unwanted new citizen. He doesn't plan on murder, but murder is what inevitably happens and it is up to him (or so he thinks) to solve the crime and to save his own skin in the process! The other characters that populate the novel and their intertwining relationships to each other and to the plot itself made this book a very enjoyable read. I will definitely go back and read the George Felse series from the beginning!!
