Hooper, always the daring brother, seizes a once-in-a-lifetime chance when passing the Wilkes house to get a peek at the legendary lamp. But simple curiosity could open a Pandora's box of trouble for the McRaes. Whisked from her opulent home in the middle of the night, Dawsey Wilkes wakes up deep in the Carolina swamps, the prisoner of a rowdy family who support the infamous Henry Berry Lowry, a vigilante intent on bringing justice to the poor. Wooed by the competitive McRae brothers and shunned by their sister Ellie, Dawsey remains intent on getting back home to her ailing father. But has it been God's plan all along to unite these two very different families?"--P. [4] of cover.

I have read all of Marcia's books. I highly recommend them.
This story is woven around a golden lamp in a very unusual way. A raider, a Colonel, a vigilante and 3 people who think they are brother and sister but may never learn the truth.
A story of forgiveness and God reuniting a girl with her twin sistr and her father. Yet she was raised by Silas and Odell and believes she is their child and not that of her father. It takes her by surprise and a while to even accept.
Hooper, Donovan and Ellie (Dilsey) are all sure they are blood relatives by birth and yet are all so very different.
My heart went out to the Colonel because to have a baby snatched from her crib haunted him all his life. He is beside himself. The Mother allows herself to die because of the loss of her baby.
Making the best of bad situations draws you into the story.
At the end I thought of Joseph in the Bible sold into slavery but God having a plan for Joseph. Joseph finally was able to forgive his brothers because he saw God working in the plan.
Yet I was a little disappointed at the end. I'm not sure I could have been so forgiving myself if my baby was taken from her crib and the death of Colonel's wife had to be hard - very hard. I'm not sure as Dawsey I could be so forgiving toward those who captured me either.
Yet it is a story that will keep you reading from beginning to end and you'll have problems putting it down.
