As extraordinary an achievement as Cryptonomicon, Quicksilver is Neal Stephenson's first novel in his acclaimed Baroque Cycle. Neal Stephenson follows his international bestseller, the WWII thriller Cryptonomicon, with a novel set in the 16th and 17th centuries, in a world of war, scientific, religious and political turmoil. With a cast of characters that includes Newton, Leibniz, Christopher Wren, Charles II, Cromwell and the young Benjamin Franklin, Stephenson again shows his extraordinary ability to get inside a place and time; as he did for the futures of his science fiction (Snowcrash,The Diamond Age) and for WWII (Cryptonomicon), here he does for the England of the Civil War and the Europe of the Wars of Religion and the Scientific Revolution. Quicksilver is yet another tour-de-force from a writer who is simply unique.

A marvelous romp through a fictional 17th century! Pirates, harem girls, philosophers, vagabonds! Sex, war, insane royalty and the history of monetary currency! It's all here, folks!
And it is one big volume of 3 big, intelligent, fun 3 volume set. Do ya like Big Books? Not afraid of a story with more than 6 characters in it? Can you handle science, a bit of philosophy, and some syphilitic hallucinations now and again?
This book is not for shallow people.
But it might be for you.

Awful
If you are an avid reader as I am, do not waste your time on this or any other Neal Stephenson book. There are many avenues the book could take to make it interesting, instead the author decides to clutter it with "stuff" that you hope will be tied in later in the book but then are disappointed that it is not. What a waste of precious reading time! I even read the 2nd Barque Cycle novel to make sure Quicksilver wasn't a fluke, but it appears that they are all the same. Do not waste your time.
