That Honthorst sclzedtheoppmtu111t\ otsketching the voung enthusiast whose name was doubtless already known at the court. His pictu1e has been thought by some to be 11 caric a.ture This, we think, is an unfor tunate mistake that could onlv have been niade by those who have not seen the original mezzotint c11rr111110' (min. By 75in.) by I'. Llolmes, published m 1799 bv the Quaker bookseller, Thomas ('lio Rickman. The fact 1s that George Fox's face, as seen in this print, is one of quite singular beaut\. No reproduction can convev it, and our small block 1s introduced only to 1ri\ e the barest idea of Holmes' s beautiful work. The cry of 11 truly aspiring soul seems to be on the lips, and the intense expression of the features is not more remarkable than their re finement. It has been well suggested that Honthorst sketched George Fox as he appeared 111 one of his solitary walks ln the fields, of which we read ln the earlier portions of the Journal.
