Well, Mr. Porter has a thesaurus-requiring writing style, but clearly had done a great deal of serious research into a fascinating topic. There's a lot of good information on the development of Quackery in the 18th century, along with great and lengthy and therefore tedious discourse on trying to figure out in that age of "balance of humors" medical practice just how to separate the Quacks from the "faculty" physicians. That became annoying in redundancy. I'd like to have seen DATES of when some of these folks were in operation. He alludes to "early 18th century" and "from the late 1600s" and so forth, and does date illustrations, but much of the text leaves the reader wondering which of these people were working at what phase of the 18th century - the "long" 18th century, as he so frequently put it. All in all, it's a good overview of 18th century Quackery with some nice commentary on the medical practices of the era in general, but needs less discussion of how he chooses to define Quacks and more detail about who was working when so that a reader can put them into context. I look forward to reading some of the sources that he used in order to get the detail that I want to find.
