There was a time when the word "corrido" was seldom used in connection with banda music. In the beginning, banda was strictly instrumental music -- and corridos (Mexican folk narratives) were written for vocalists, not instrumentalists. It was possible to perform an instrumental version of a corrido in the 1940s and 1950s, but because lyrics and storytelling are so crucial to the corrido experience, mariachi and norteño vocalists were much more likely to perform corridos back then. However, times have changed. Vocalists are now the norm in banda -- in fact, banda instrumentalists have become a minority -- and as a result, corridos are something one expects banda artists to perform in the 21st century. Corridos are certainly dominant on this engaging 2008 release by La Original Banda el Limon de Salvador Lizarraga (as opposed to La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de René Camacho). Not everything on Puros Corridos y Algo Más (Pure Corridos and Something More) is a corrido; "Sin Pensar Yo Te Engane," for example, is not a corrido. But corridos are the 35-minute CD's primary focus, and Salvador Lizarraga's band is in fine form on spirited offerings such as "El Moro de Cumpas," "Sangre Caliente," and "El Cantador." One might notice that the word "caballo" appears in three of the song titles: "Caballo Prieto Azabache," "El Caballo Bayo," and "Caballo Alazán Lucero." In Spanish, "caballo" means "horse" (in Italian, the word is "cavallo"), and quite a few corridos have been written about horses over the years. So it isn't surprising that horses are mentioned more than once on Puros Corridos y Algo Más, which is easily among the more essential CDs that Lizarraga's version of Banda el Limon provided in the 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
