Artemis Classics have combined 1965 and 1964 Vanguard performances of Henry Purcell's The Masque in Dioclesian and Dido and Aeneas for the first time into a single, no-frills two-disc package. These are still serviceable representations of Purcell, partly thanks to the period band and chorus that back up the Deller Consort, namely Concentus Musicus Wien under the direction of the young Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Although the group sounds a bit scrappier than what some have come to expect from Harnoncourt, the performance bristles with youthful energy and enthusiasm, and the peasant characterizations in Dido and Aeneas are appropriately broad and amusing. Alfred Deller's voice hadn't gone into the tank quite yet when these recordings were made, and the other singers here, including alto Helen Watts and tenor Robert Tear, do a splendid job, both in singing the music and projecting the text....
