Seller's Description:
Very Good+ in Very Good jacket. First edition, 1976, hardcover with red cloth boards in dust jacket, octavo, 177pp., not illustrated. Book VG+ with small faint staining to spine ends, binding tight, previous owner Peter Machamer's signature to front flyleaf, otherwise text clean and unmarked. DJ VG with sun to spine, edgewear that includes a couple small closed tears and their related creases, rubbing, sticker to rear panel. Machamer was Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. His work has been influential in philosophy of science in developing an account of mechanistic explanation which rejects standard deductive models of explanation, such as the deductive-nomological model by understanding scientific practice as the search for mechanisms. His research has also focused on 17th-century history of philosophy and science, on Galileo Galilei and René Descartes in particular, and on values and science.
