Brown (1902-1970) was a Gestalt psychologist, perception researcher, social psychologist and representative of an experimental psychopathology based on a critical connection between psychoanalysis and the findings and research methods of psychological field theory by Kurt Lewin. After studying at Yale University, Brown studied with Gestalt psychology pioneers at the University of Berlin: Max Wertheimer, Kurt Lewin and Wolfgang Köhler. His application of psychological field theory to social analysis in his major social psychological work Psychology and the Social Order (1936) was one of the most influential books in American social psychology in the 1930s and 1940s.
