Respected historian of science Ronald Numbers here examines one of the most influential, yet least examined, religious leaders in American history -- Ellen G. White, the enigmatic visionary who founded the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Numbers scrutinizes White's life (1827-1915), from her teenage visions and testimonies to her extensive advice on health reform, which influenced the direction of the church she founded. This third edition features a new preface and two key documents that shed further light on White -- transcripts of the trial of Elder Israel Dammon in 1845 and the proceedings of the secret Bible Conferences in 1919.

I have just finished readijng the book. It gives some details into the life of Ellen White that changed my opinion of her. Yes, I can agree with Numbers that she was a religious product of her times "to most Millerites Ellen's visions were simply another manifestation of the unfortunate religious drift of the times toward fanaticism. Early 19th century America abounded with 'prophets' of every description."Through she warned against fanaticism, she did her share of rolling on the floors, falling into visions, etc. Numbers does a clean job in pointing out where White got most of her beliefs on fashion, foods, & healthcare. as he views her contemporaries and close associates. Numbers examines her from a mental health prospective and concludes that she suffered from what mental-health experts today would call 'somatizations disorder with accompanying histrionic persoanlity style. - symptons formerly grouped together and label 'hysteria'"
