He even built, at her suggestion, a temple to Baal in Samaria, and reared in it an altar, and made an image of Astarte.1 And this was an entirely new state of things. There was the establishment of a licentious nature-worship, and joined with it the determination to uproot the worship of Jehovah. Upon how grand a scale Jezebel set up her idolatries we learn from the fact that there were four hundred and fifty prophets 2 of Baal, and four hundred prophets of Astarte, who ate at the queen's own table. And not satisfied with this she put to death the true prophets, as we 1 1 Kings xvi. 32, 33. The word rendered in our version grove is in the Hebrew Asherah, which is nearly another form of the word Astarte, or Ashtaroth. Her image in ancient times was a roughly carved beam of wood, fixed in the earth; while the statues of Baal were made of stone. As the Asherah could thus be cut down and burnt (see Judges vi. 25), our translators concluded it must be a grove of trees. As for the meaning of the word, Asherah is probably a name for the planet Venus, and signifies good luck; the root being connected with the well-known word Jashar, and implying prosperity and success. But that beautiful planet soon became the symbol of lust, and Baal, the husband, the lord, and Astarte, love, soon became merely representatives of the reproductive powers of nature, and were worshipped by acts of the most unbridled profligacy. 2 Evidently Jezebel did not consider that she had done enough for her national deities till she had surrounded them with a vast retinue of persons who imitated the Jehovah-prophets.
