by MARTIN M. NUZA Published: Jan 2007 Pages: 390 Description PROMISES: THE MASON ORDEAL.EMILY'S HARROWING STORY. After the turn of the twentieth century, America was at the threshold of one of the worst depressions the world had ever witnessed. The depression changed the lives of millions of law-abiding citizens; the rich suddenly became poor, jobs were scarce and people struggled to survive, some with very low income - others with no income at all. The suicide rate rose higher than ever before as people lost their homes, their farms, their lands and their entire possessions and they were impotent to do anything about it and could only watch helplessly, as their lives changed exasperatedly, for the worst. Prostitution bloomed and many married and single women alike were forced to sell their bodies just to live another day - these were rough times indeed. Corruption flourished, as a number of conniving individuals who managed to maintain their power were looked upon as Gods and consequently controlled everything, creating a vast web of black-market and crime with the only authority being the green dollar bill. Even after the worst months of the depression took their toll and it seemed that the worst was over, people were still struggling to survive - rebuilding their shattered lives, living in shacks and at the mercy of those who had the green bills. As a result of this, cheap labour skyrocketed to unseen proportions to the extent that people would virtually work for free, as long as they had enough to put food on their tables. One of the families who suffered greatly during those harsh times was that of the Mason's: Jack Mason was married to Emily and between them they had two sons and one daughter which they raised with love and harmony, surrounded by the security offered by Jack's executive position, that is, until the depression struck and Jack lost everything, turning to the bottle for seclusion and changing his entire way of life, forever. This is their story, the story of Emily Mason, who with courage and determination never imagined how high a price she would have to pay to keep her family together.
