His textbook, History of Economic Thought, currently in its fourth edition, has been translated into several languages. This is a book about the decline of the academy by a man who loved to teach, worked closely with students outside the classroom, was a successful academic publisher, and was incredibly happy in his chosen profession. Yet he was part of a great tragedy, in that political movements that he was in complete sympathy with-civil rights, anti-war protests, and women's liberation-had disastrous effects on higher education.
