We believe that it can, we believe in the divinity of human nature. We believe that no ideal is too lofty, no conception too grand, to find a responsive chord in every human heart; and if this chord is struck often enough and strongly enough, it will set the key and the whole life will attune itself in harmony with it. It has been said that, since we require no religious test of fellowship, we are not a church, but merely a sort of ethical lecture society, divorced from the idea of religion. If religion means one's idea of God or the formal worship of God, if it means the belief in the immortality of the soul, if it means any particular belief in religious matters or on any other subject, then we are not a church; for while most of us do believe in and worship God, and do cherish a belief in a future life, our organization requires none of these as a test of fellowship. But if religion means the love of our fellow-men, if it means the development of the loftiest aspirations of the human soul, if it means the golden rule, and the sermon on the mount, -then ours is a religious society and we are a church, -for it is toward the realization of these ideals that we are pledged to strive. We cannot always be true to our highest ideals, but we can strive toward them, refusing to be satisfied with any ideal less lofty, any motive less pure.
