The aim of the enquiry as a whole is to show why there must be a soul, and in what sense precisely this soul should be under stood. A complete or final answer to such a question is, of course, unattainable until the day when all speculative problems have found their solution but the labours of philosophers and psychologists in recent years have made it possible to appreciate most of the important questions at issue with a clearer understanding than at earlier times, and permit the hope that an enquiry which keeps both the earlier and the more recent literature constantly in mind, need not be altogether fruitless.
