This was one of my favorite books when I was a young child, and my boys are just as fond of it. I think it is somewhat out of fashion for a few reasons. First, the idea of labeling kids as "bad" probably didn't sit well with progressive parenting advocates of the 70's-90's. The prince is actually spanked for his misbehavior --- horrors! Second, there is a positive portrayal of a witch (indeed, *SPOILERS* she is the vehicle for our protagonist's redemption), and the religious right nutters harassing our schools and libraries can't like that. But the book helps kids see how bad behavior alienates others and how this little boy suffers a terrible trial as a result of his and is brought back to his family by an act of kindness.
