This book is likely one of the very first accounts of growing up 'on the spectrum' before the era of awareness and early identification. We get to look through her lens and sort of experience her life in ways that show how differently she is neuro-biologically wired from so-called neuro-typical people. Her struggles from childhood to simply live her life and eventually contribute to the growing body of work on this important topic are authentic, astonishing, and ongoing.
Despite her difficulties functioning in a neuro-typical world, she manages to get an education, get married, raise a family, and successfully pursue several different careers.
The author is a well-known, much respected authority on this subject and brings valuable insights to share with us in her personal account.
Originally published in 1999 and updated in 2015, it is still - mid 2023 - a dated view into her world. For example, her condition is not considered a disorder today. Identification process is still called diagnosing, as if it were an illness. It is not. That terminology has not caught up yet.
Spectrum people are regular human beings with different internal wiring for processing information is all. They are all individuals who are no more alike than anyone else. Her life story is uniquely hers.
As she puts it, she manages to somehow be partially in both worlds. And that is how she bridges the gap for us!
