Thus, when the bones of the thigh, leg, and foot are adjusted together in their natural position, the whole length of the limb from the upper surface of the head of the femur to the under surface of the calcaneum is 30 inches. But the length of the leg measured in this way is always more than equal to the half height of the body, and in this case was probably from one to two inches less, which would bring us to the same stature as by the preceding computation. The limb bones are remarkable for the combination of strength and slenderness which they present. The pelvis (figs. 31-33) is unfortunately incomplete in its symphysial region, but what there is of it is exceedingly interesting. The sacrum is broad, wider than it is long, and its anterior concavity is well marked. The ilia have broad, concave, and obliquely inclined upper surfaces. The transverse diameter of the brim of the pelvis is 5.1 in. In consequence of the absence of the symphysis, and the broken state of the promontory of the sacrum, the conjugate diameter cannot be accurately ascertained, but it was certainly not less, while it probably was more, than 4.5 in. The subpubic arch has the characteristic width, rounded summit, and flanged out pubic boundaries observed in a wellformed European female. The distance from the ilio-pectineal eminence to the ischial tuberosity is only 3.6 in., which is rather less than the average depth in the well formed female European, so that the true pelvis has the characteristic female shallowness. But this pelvis departs from the ordinary type of the well formed European female in the great antero-posterior diameter of its cavity, which must have amounted to at least 5.3 in. while in the average European female this dimension...
