This book begins with an introduction entitled "Why Pray?" My answer is because we have a God who is alive and moves among us. I demonstrate this with a variety of quite intense stories about people and their experiences of God - my experiences, experiences of people I know and people like Martin Luther King Jr., Thomas Merton and Sr. Helen Prejean, who tell of the encounter in their own words. Our God is alive and active among us! The rest of the book is about ways of prayer. It begins with a short chapter about prayer of petition, the way we normally think of prayer - talking to God and asking for things. It then teaches a variety of ways we can listen to God ad open ourselves to the experience of God - praying with scripture, reflection, nature, dance, mental prayer, prayer of loving kindness, liturgy of the hours and centering prayer. There is also an appendix that contains a night prayer for each day of the week. There are thirteen ways of prayer introduced, all intended to help the reader experience God and know deep peace, true love and lasting joy.
