Trobaugh (pen name) could not have written with such insight unless she had been steeped in pre-1960s Southerd culture. She brings her three characters: a Southern aristocratic lady, a Southern poor white woman and a Southern poor black woman to life with such vivid descriptions that I could picture each one of them in my mind's eye. Each character is the effluence of her sub-culture without being a steriotype. Trobaugh's theme is the belief that none of the cultures can prosper without each other; and that by working together, they can preserve the best of all three and leave the worst behind. A good Southern literary fiction read. Had Praise Jerusalem been published by a major publisher or even a publisher with strong Southern literary connections, it would still be in print and even a major motion picture.
