These stretchers or litters were made by lashing together two poles with cross-pieces. If the warrior suffered great pain a bed of moss or of tender branches was made in the litter. Wounds were always kept clean, and when necessary were sutured with threads from the inner bark of basswood, or a fibre from the long tendon of a deer's leg.
