As permanency in building seems, at the present day, to be an object more desirable than formerly, it has been thought that a brief account of the nature and qualities of building materials, with a short exposition of their component parts, would not be misplaced in a treatise of this kind. The Compiler flatters himself, that he has, on this head, furnished some informa tion, that will be serviceable not only to the operator but to the proprietor; neither of whom can, with safety, remain unacquainted with the quality of the materials employed.
