Good in good dust jacket. Ex-library. Good solid ex-library book with the usual stamps, numbers & plastic over the cover. Plastic shows scuffing wear & tape is yellowed. DJ shows yellowing under the plastic. Pages are free of writing & tight with corner, edge & smudging wear and the picture pages have browning at the edges. Outside edge of pages has dirt wear. Book is a little cocked.
This is a wonderful jazz biography written in a style that is easily accessible.
Problems: since the book, I think, was meant to be a popular biography, too much attention is given to who was in the band at any particular moment. There are so many names dropped, but these can be easily skimmed over. Also, one responsiblity of a popular biography is to provide some narrative. Whenever DeLong wander into speculation or creative narrative, it is always clear that he is doing so; however, I could have done without it and found it kind of sappy most of the time. For example, DeLong speculates that Whiteman took a lone ride on his horse across his ranch to cry when he found out that Gershwin had died. It's too much melodrama for taste.
The biography is very thorough on Whiteman's career from start to finish and some of the tales of fast cars, drinking, and concert hijinks are hilarious.
Read the book for pleasure and maybe a little education. You will certainly get both.
