Excerpt from Poor Law Unions, a Statement of the Names of the Several Unions and Poor Law Parishes in England and Wales: And of the Population, Area, and Rateable Value Thereof in 1881 This List of the Unions and Parishes under separate Boards of Guardians in England and Wales is so arranged as to show the Poor Law Parishes* of which each Union consists. During recent years many alterations have been made in the areas of Parishes in consequence of the passing of the Divided Parishes and Poor Law Amendment Act, 1876, and the Acts amending that Statute; these alterations have been the result either of Orders issued by the Local 'government Board or of the operation of Section 2 of the Divided Parishes and Poor Law Amendment Act, 1882, by Virtue of which any part of a Parish which was isolated or detached from the other part or parts thereof, and which was wholly surrounded by another Parish, became, froin and after the 25th of March, 1883, amalgamated with such other Parish. The Board are not in possession of complete information as to the alterations effected by the Act of 1882; hence changes of the former class only are Shown in the List. These are indicated in foot-notes. They include alterations effected by Orders which came into Operation on or before the 26th March, 1887.
