Seller's Description:
Fine in Near Fine jacket. First printing. Cloth, 528 pps. with index; illustrations. An important addition to the biographical work on Edgar Allan Poe, this volume offres the largely unknown and previously unpublished correspondence between Sarah Helen Whitman and John Henry Ingram. Whitman, a poet from Providence, Rhode Island, was engaged to Poe in 1848 and brought to her letters not only an intimate knowledge of man but also a woman's (and fellow poet's) perspective of his work. This correspondence, which ran from 1873 until shortly before Whitman's death in 1878, formed the basis for Ingram's famed vindicatory biography of Poe published in 1880. A fine copy in bright, crisp dust jacket featuring a black, flesh and orange representation of Felix Vallotton's 1894 wood engraving portrait of Poe; jacket has two very minor short closed tears and a hint of wear at the tips.
