This collection of poetical works by Charles Cotton has been selected and illustrated by Claud Lovat Fraser. Fraser was a talented author and artist of the late 19th and early 20th century. After serving in the first world war, Fraser would go on to produce numerous theatrical designs, custom bookplates and book illustrations. In the particular volume Fraser has created a series of illustrations to accompany the poetry of Charles Cotton. The poem featured in this volume are as follows: Caelia's Fall, Resolution in four Sonnets: Alice, Marg'ret, Mary, Martha; A Sonnet; Epitaph; Summer Quatrains: Morning, Noon, Evening, Night; Epigramme; Sonnet; Winter. The front of the original dustwrapper is present, rebacked onto a modern paper wrap, with a ink title to the spine. Evidence of bookplate removal to the front pastedown, with bookplate partial remaining. It features the name 'John C. Tarr'. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards, held in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the extremities, with rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Fading to the spine. The odd mark to the front and rear board. Small tide mark to the tail of the rear board. Partial bookplate to the front pastedown, with evidence of bookplate removal. With the front of the original dustwrapper present, rebacked onto a paper wrap. With an ink inscription to the spine. This edition was printed by Harold Curwen at the Curwen Press on the 14th March 1922, and is printed on handmade paper. A selection of poems from seventeenth century poet and author Charles Cotton, best known for his translations of the work of Michel de Montaigne. English artist, designer and author Claud Lovat Fraser made his own selection of Cotton's poems, transcribed them into a notebook and added decorations. A note from the publisher explains that these 'seventy-five drawings were done slowly and deliberately, and with the greatest enjoyment'. In the publisher's original cloth binding.
