Steam pipes, by means of which an adequate temperature is maintained throughout all, and doubled in some of the cells, preserve, at an expense of no more than 2s. per diem for fuel, a generous warmth. The sleeping berths consist of pallets or inclined planes of wood, erected at an angle of the cells; and the ventilation, both from above and lateral, is placed entirely beyond the control of the inmates, so that, whilst kept perfectly comfortable as respects warmth, they are supplied (much, we believe, against the will of prisoners in general, ) with abundance of fresh air. The ground floor range of the premises are occupied by the offices of the detectives, seventeen in number, and of the assistant superintendents, or lieutenants and inspectors, clerks, &c., for the transaction of criminal and other police business. The underground flat affords accommodation for mustering and marshalling the police force, cleaning their lanterns and accoutrements, &c., access and egress being obtained to and from the Police Lane, in the rear of the buildings. The extent of this business may be conjectured from the fact of 15,277 persons having been brought before the magistrates in 1849, at a cost of 24,816: 19: 2, and fines amounting to 3583:1: 4 having been levied. The operations directed from this central establishment, now comprise not only the police of the city of Glasgow, but the southern or Gorbals division; the eastern division or that of Calton, Milend, Bridgeton, and Camlachie; and F the western or Anderston and Woodlands division: besides the Clyde or river police, now included under the same general superintendence.
