A Classic Ages Well
Anyone who plays role-playing games has at least heard of Dungeons and Dragons and most fantasy gamers have played one version of it or the other. This is the real deal, the last version of the game that contained the majority of Gygax's original ideas and still kept the unique blend of tabletop strategy and personal characterization that made the game such a monumental success to begin with. Arguably this was the last time the Dungeons and Dragons system existed in its original form.
The original system did have it's faults, but it's a rare case of the faults being easy to deal with and resolve thanks largely to the modular nature of the system behind it. With the Advent of AD&D 2.5 the system became bloated and strained, with the flaws being more pronounced and every patch created for it creating new problems.
The 3rd and 4th editions of the game are Dungeons and Dragons in name only, having kept the same attribute names and window dressing, but abandoned the original system for a more "up to the moment" system revolving almost solely around combat.
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition was the pinnacle of the original system and I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in playing the older games or just those interested in a bit of RPG history.
