Seller's Description:
Fine. Book First edition. Foreword by James A. Michener. Quarto. xiv, [2], 632pp. Double-page map, index. Two-tone red and maroon cloth, gilt. A very fine copy. An annotated bibliography of 2080 entries grouped by successive years to 1866, arranged alphabetically within each year. Mattes has done a magnificent job, dividing each individual entry into four groups: the heading, route and chronology, content highlights, and compiler's comments. Mattes also rates each entry as to historical and literary value and indicates repositories in which the book may be found. The index is useful and includes the name of the travelers, listed alphabetically; the year of travel and sex of the traveler; the narrative form and medium (diary, journal, etc. ); places of departure and arrival; the section of the Missouri River crossing; and, of course, location within the text.
