One issue causing debate in the milieu of educational planning is the question of how and why education should be adapted in situations of emergency, crisis or disaster. The message of this booklet is that education is paramount in such circumstances. The author, using examples of recent events and real-life testimonies, highlights the needs of crisis-stricken communities. She emphasizes the important role that education can play in instilling social and ethical values in the minds of youth, and in teaching appropriate behaviour when reacting to natural disasters. Her argument is that although education cannot solve current problems within a country, it can provide a basis on which to change peoples' attitudes, and thus prevent future conflicts. It also prepares young people for an eventual return to normality, and provides them with what it is hoped will be a recognized qualification in their country of origin. The education system should facilitate their integration into the working world and, in an ideal context, enable them to enjoy a better future.
