But Planet Dub, a two-disc compilation of tracks by British dub artists from the Planet Dog stable, is deeply rooted in reggae tradition; band names like Rootsman, Alpha and Omega, the Disciples and the Power Steppers hint at the deep, bass-heavy one-drop skank that characterizes every track. That groove does lead to a certain sameness, and only fanatics are likely to listen to both discs straight through. But those fanatics will be well rewarded; though it's hard to identify highlights on an album with a concept this consistent, Silicon Drum's "Dubkiss" and the earth-shaking bass of A.N.R.'s "Rockers Rising" are guaranteed to make your eyes roll back in your head. "David and Goliath," by Alpha and Omega, is straight roots reggae with a thunderous undertow. All of it is great, even if none of it is quite transcendent.
