If the infernal secrets of the kidnappers' prison-houses, their plantations, could be divulged; and all the tortures, scourgings, rapes, maimings, barbarity, pollution, and massacres with which they are begrimed, black and bloody, could be unfolded, the record would be like the ancient roll of the Prophet Ezekiel, " written within and without, lamentatidhs, mourning and wo." Some time since, a coloured woman was put in thp jail of Lexington, Kentucky. She was charged with havinuset fire to her tyrant's barn, &c.; and upon the trial was con Wcted, and sentenced to death. Her execution was respited on account of her pregnancy. During her detention in the prison, her unhappy and delicate condition awakened the attention of some ladies of that town, who visited her in her cell; and in endeavouring to impress her mind with a proper sense of her guilt, they elicited the cause why she had committed the offence. "The unfortunate creature's narrative was to this effect. A young man, a slave on a neighbouring plantation, and she had become faithfully attached, and were permitted by her master to cohabit together. After a lapse of some time, her driver fixed his adulterous eyes upon her, and demanded her compliance with his sensual desires. She refused. He insisted; whipped her unmercifully for her disobedience to his orders; and finally, partly through her incapacity in her emaciated state longer to resist him, and partly by force, accomplished his infamous design. During this procedure, the ruthless felon had prohibited her lover from appearing about his house.
