I enjoyed the movie and now love the book. Just need to remember and remind others that this is not based on true events...although i'm sure girls were lost but the creepiness behind everything is definitely due to great writting.

Real-life mystery solved.
Normally it goes the other way around; you read a book, then see the film. In the case of Picnic at Hanging Rock it was the other way around for me. Like a lot of movie goers I was deeply moved by the Australian film which launched the film industry there.
I have lots of Australian friends and asked them all were the film and book based on real happenings in the girl's boarding school. Most of them said it was a true story but I was not convinced.
Finally, I looked for the book in Alibris and there was the simple statement on the fly-leaf by the author:
'Whether this story is fact or fiction, I leave to the judgement of the reader'.
Mystery solved, thank you Alibris and now let me try to figure out the reality of that wonderful film: 'The Thind Man' the same way!

I was first introduced to Picnic at Hanging Rock though Peter Weir's quite brilliant film adaptation of Lindsey's novel. Although quite young when I saw the film, it has (for the last 30 years or so) held a strange fascination for me and I think anyone who allows themselves to engage in the story will find that inexplicable sense of wonder too. Picnic at Hanging Rock should be 'experienced' rather than simply read.
