On Pianos in Paradise Lou Teicher and Art Ferrante develop a concept of sorts, music for the tropics co-designed by the man conducting their orchestra, Nick Perito. Titles like "Taboo," "Shangri La," "The Breeze and I," "Jungle Drums," and "Adventure in Paradise" move the cocktails from out of the lounge and onto the beach. This isn't Roger Williams doing battle with Liberace; these maestros work in unison to blend a unique sound that at times reflects bits of Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack work. "African Echoes" rumbles with sound, a different sort of rumble than what they give to "Ebb Tibe." It's exciting stuff setting the duo apart from the muzak schlock that garage rockers of the day avoided. "Adventures in Paradise" is stunning in its simplicity, a miniepic feeling like a self-contained motion picture. The album cover features a woman obscured by leaves soaked in different colored lights on and around her face, very trendy for those who would pick up on these sounds decades after they were recorded. "Misty" is no mere instrumental cover version, Perito's strings swelling to envelope the exquisite piano work. "Claire de Lune" is more subtle, using that melancholy lull from Sounds Orchestral's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" to conclude side one while "Moon of Manakoora" with its sweeping elegance wraps up this island-based affair. A strong and enjoyable addition to the Ferrante & Teicher collection. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi
