Captivating Images
I first encountered these images as part of an exhibition on Shanghai at the Royal Ontario Museum. I sat through the full slide show and was entranced. Although generally without any human figures, the are images deeply inhabited by the residue of human lives - now overwhelmed by the transformation of Shanghai. The night shots are stunning. The depth of field and colour sensitivity are marvellous.
I kept thinking of the nostalgic, colour saturated, and dark images in Won Kar Wai's film In The Mood For Love. where a refugee family from Shanghai was central to the story.
I keep picking up the book and entering deeper into the lives captured here.
