Soon Diaghilev had convinced the young composer to turn the work into a ballet score. Benois was chosen to be his collaborator in the libretto, Fokine and Nijinsky became involved, and the bizarre tale of three dancing puppets -- Petrushka (a folk character in Russian lore), the Ballerina, and the Moor, brought to life in a tragic tale of love -- would soon become one of the most acclaimed and performed of ballet masterpieces. Telling of the highlights of a carnival and main scenes around the Punch and Judy puppet show, the score outlines a fun filled afternoon for children in early 20th century Russia. Petrushka is Punch the ugly male puppet struggling for the love of the ballerina (Judy) with the Moor, who kills him with his scimitar. Punch, rather the ghost of Petrushka has its revenge on the narrator once the children leave and the rain closes down the sideshow.
