Peter and the local children learn that their local policeman (Officer Green) is going to be taken off the job of crossing guard and put onto other tasks. Peter and the children are bummed so Peter writes up a petition and the children sign it, asking the mayor to change his mind about officer Green and takes the letter to school to shows his teacher. Teacher gets together with the police dept and arranges for Peter to be excused for one day and to ride around with officer Green to learn about all the other jobs that he police dept must handle besides being crossing guards. Then Peter is instructed to tell all the children who signed the petition how busy officer Green will be. He has dinner with officer Green and his wife. Next day the children are walking to the street crossing wondering who will be there to help them and it is Mrs. Green, who Peter just had dinner with the night before.
