Re-issue of Jack Reacher's latest adventure to tie-in with publication of the paperback. Never forgive, never forget. That's Jack Reacher's standard operating procedure. And Francis Xavier Quinn was the worst guy he had ever met. He had done truly unforgivable things. So Reacher was glad to know he was dead. Until the day he saw him, alive and well, riding in a limousine outside Boston's Symphony Hall. Never apologize. Never explain. When Reacher witnesses a brutal attempt to kidnap a terrified young student on a New England campus, he takes the law into his own hands. That's his way, after all. Only this time, a cop dies, and Reacher doesn't stick around to explain. Has he lost his sense of right and wrong? Just because this time, it's personal? So begins Lee Child's seventh novel. Another heartstopping page-turner, it brings back Child's much-loved hero, Jack Reacher, at his pragmatic and uncompromising best.

If you're a fan of the slam-bang action genre, you can't go wrong with a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child. Reacher is a former U.S. Army policeman who, after being forcibly retired, has devoted himself to a life of aimless wandering and righting the wrongs he encounters along the way. He is the modern version of the English tradition of the knight-errant or the Japanese "ronin". Despite the fact that the author, Lee Child, is neither American, nor military, nor a policeman, the series has a great sense of authenticity. Each and every one is a very satisfying read. They are the equivalent of comfort food.

Reacher seeks revenge
Strolling along a street in Boston, in front of Symphony Hall, Reacher is stunned to see a face from his past. A face that he expected never to see again, since he had eliminated the guy 10 years ago, while still an Army MP: a very bad guy, a traitor, in fact, as well as a sadist and murderer.
Soon, Reacher finds himself embroiled in a complicated coverup/scam of the sort that can so easily go wrong, alone in a houseful of scary mob-types on a desolate headland just south of Portland, Maine. He needs to find out what happened to a DEA agent that had been sent into the house, get the skinny on what exactly the Beck family is involved in, and get his final revenge on Quinn, who seems to be somehow involved as the mastermind here. A sexy encounter with his DEA handler, Susan Duffy, provides the necessary light relief from all the tension, because Jack is really on his own, more than ever, in this really creepy tale. At one point, his only way to get out of the mansion is to climb down a drainpipe and swim (in the Atlantic Ocean, in November, no less --a thing that can barely be done in August, truth be told) to get to a meeting with his backup people. Jack prevails, naturally, but the way he gets from here to there in this book makes it one of my favorite Reacher novels. Highly recommended.

No Persuasion Needed
Lee Child is a fabulous writer. This book has very little set up and all of a sudden you find yourself intrenched in the middle of high drama. I think one of the reasons we keep reading about Jack Reacher is that we all wish that for a short time we could be like he is. He is a protector of the underdog and footloose and fanct free. He has integrity and honor and great love for his country. The best part of course is that he doesn't have to kiss anyone's butt to exist. The downside is that his lifestyle is only so neat because it's a novel. This book does exactly what a book is supposed to do. It takes you on a journey and transports you to another place and time. Great entertainment. This is one of my favorites of his books.
