If you want to see what it's like to go from 'zero' to 'hero,' this is the book. His writing is double checked by others, to give the most accurate description of history. Grant even discusses his bad decisions, along with his correct. I really liked this, and recommend this to others, he is not self aggrandizing about his accomplishments. Very humble in my opinion.

US Grant Memoirs Review
It is no wonder why this memoir is rated so high. I could hardly put the book down. What a man for the times!
