Yet, in some parts of the earth, this seems to be the real effect of our efforts. And later consequences of our behavior may well be to drag down the living standards of ourselves, surely of our children. It is these conclusions, and the observations and data (not all, by any means, original with me) on which the conclusions are based, that make up the body of this book. If, sometimes, the drama of the situations in which these people exist is set forth, this is done because the drama is there - and in the hope it will help the reader appreciate the feelings shared by many of the world's millions.
