Seller's Description:
Good. First edition. A sound and intact, but well worn, about good copy lacking the dustwrapper. The primary charm of this copy of Caroline Gordon's first book is that it belonged to the author's brother, Morris Meriwether Gordon, with his ownership Signature dated in the year of publication. Morris Gordon has used the blank portions of the last few pages to pen some French and English sacred poetry. In addition, Morris supplied a brown paper jacket, which he titled on the spine: "Penhally by Caroline 1931." Morris remained close to Caroline throughout their lives and was unfailingly supportive of her during her difficult divorce from Allen Tate and in the last years of her life.

Fine. First edition. New bookstore label on the front pastedown, else just about fine, lacking the dustwrapper. Author's first book. Laid in is a sheet of paper apparently meant to accompany this book, Inscribed by Gordon: "To H.D. Trevillian. Cordially, Caroline Gordon. November 15, 1931." Trevillian was either a critic or perhaps bookstore owner. We have seen letters addressed to him from other authors as well.

Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. First edition. Fine in a very near fine dustwrapper with the slightest of uniform age-toning. A lovely copy of the author's uncommon and fragile first novel. Gordon's reputation as the "den mother" for the Southern Literary Renaissance has overshadowed the excellence and enduring qualities of her own work, which are certain to be better appreciated by future generations of critics.
