This was undertaken as an MLitt thesis at Lancaster University under the supervision of Professor Austin Woolrych, and already exhibited many of the qualities which would characterise Clyve's mature work: careful scholarship, a thorough grounding in primary sources, which were carefully sifted and analysed, and a prospector's eye for the telling piece of evidence, the gold nugget shining in the dross. Clyve had come to Lancaster in 1964 from Castleford Grammar School, then best known for producing the sculptor, Henry Moore, and a succession of stars of the sports field, cricketers and rugby league players. He was one of the first generation of students at the university, domiciled in digs in the bracing air of Morecambe. After completing his thesis - which his supervisor confessed at graduation ought to have been put in for a PhD - he undertook an MA in librarianship at the University of Sheffield (his dissertation forming the basis for his first publication), and obtained a post as assistant librarian at London University's Institute of Historical Research"--
