Fr. Arrupe, SJ was there at the Atomic Bomb drop on Hiroshima. He is an MD, ministered to the bodies of those dying while contemplating how any nation can do such a thing to other men. Whatever was forged in him that day and the days which followed, he went on to lead the Jesuit Order (Society of Jesus - the Jesuits)into a truly new age for them.
This little book, which summarizes his thinking (and prayers!) on the relationship among people and mankind's relationship with God, is a gentle walk through the hopes and dreams of one person - a man- who devoted his life to the service of humankind and especially to continuing to insure the work of the men who join the Jesuits -- an order devoted to scholarship and working in the concrete for the improvement of man's relationship between God and Mankind and men and women with one another. He certainly lived and prayed for the "magis" (more!) he could do for the Jesuits and by extension for all the people of the world.
One of his achievements was the initial inviting the Catholic laity to join with the Jesuits in their shared ministry -- making the world a much better place for all mankind -- significantly changing forever the Jesuits and laypersons hopes for mankind. It was a new "partnership" forged during a war and directed to addressing post war, world needs.
