When WWII started, many men, including professional athletes enlisted in the war. While American men were fighting against the Nazis, women in the United States stepped into their shoes. Women began working in factories, and on farms, doing things that men had done before they left. They even helped the great American pastime, baseball, continue. Dorothy Kamenshek was one of the women who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). When the war broke out, Dorothy had wanted to become a nurse, but her mother wouldn't let her enlist, for fear of her safety. So, Dorothy and hundreds of other girls tried out for the first-ever professional women's baseball team. Dorothy was one of just 60 girls chosen to play for the AAGPBL. She played in the league for ten whole seasons, and played on the All-Star team all seven times they formed such a team! After retirement from baseball, Dorothy got her degree in Physical Therapy, and became very successful. Her life, and some of the history of the AAGPBL is immortalized in the movie, A League of Their Own.
