This is a long novel which consists of two books dealing with the early days of the Quakers. The first part is set in the area around Pendle Hill in Lancashire in the 17th century and tells the story of the difficulties of the Society of Friends in their early years.
It really is a wonderful novel: a great story and very readable.
The second volume is set in Pennsylvania, and concerns the descendants of the family of Volume One. Much of the story deals with the trials of conscience of the Quakers with regard to slavery.
I shall keep this book and read it several times: for me, it is a better written, but just as vivid sort of "Gone With the Wind".
It was, for me, especially important because one of my ancestors went to Pennsylvania from Lancashire under William Penn's Holy Experiment.
